HOW THIS FLY CAUGHT FIRE
We researched the possibilities and discovered that there were several “waste” products that fall into the same category that could be used as a source of fuel with a “Zero Carbon Footprint” and non-toxic status. We continued to look into recipes but unfortunately were unable to find anything that did not involve some sort of Petroleum Product as the accelerant.
Over several months, and multiple recipe attempts, we finally came up with a Fire Starter (FireFly) that will burn Clean (No petroleum products, no toxic chemicals, Zero Carbon Foot Print and recycled).
Our greatest leap forward in this was the replacement of the petroleum ingredients for a natural equivalent.
The FireFly Biofuel fire starter is made in a donut size / shape design to enhance the “life span” of your fire starter. Conventional products claim an average of 11 minutes of burning time whereas FireFly Biofuel has an average burning time of more than double that time. (25 to 30 minutes)
The manufacturing process is completely safe, with Zero petroleum products being used. FireFly is completely safe and there is no need to seal the product as there are no petroleum products to evaporate. The commonly used fire lighter has to remain sealed in order to uphold the quality, once the seal is broken the product degrades.

Kai and Mariska both come from the oilfield sector.
Mariska has 7 years in Procurement and Supply chain and has left the oilfield as an Operations Supervisor for an Oilfield Logistics Company. Kai has a whopping 20 years in the oilfield with expertise spreading from Project Manager to Regional Operations Manager in SSA. Between Mariska and Kai they have several children and pets that fill their house.
One of the concerns that was raised was the amount of toxins that are available in the house on an everyday scale that the children and dogs are exposed to or have access to. One of which is the traditional Firelighters that have become common place in South Africa.
After research, they decided to make the calculated leap to product creation of what they felt is needed in the home of the everyday consumer that would outperform the established products utilizing a “zero” toxin/chemical target. From there the Firefly Spark was born.
Originally testing was started in a Wendy house in the back garden. After months of testing, failed recipes (due to missed targets, ineffective burns times, child and pet safe requirements) they finally produced a product that met all the goals they had set for themselves. From there they moved to Blackheath into a workshop and aggressively launched into the market.
FIREFLY GIVES BACK
FireFly Biofuel is very enthusiastic about giving back to the community. We strive to not only benefit the environment with our recycling projects but also job creation.
Firefly has teamed up with “Vision Through Knowledge” to empower disabled persons. Not only to encourage self-sufficiency but also to the cause and purpose of the “Vision Through Knowledge” goals
(Creating employment opportunities, awareness and opportunity to generate their own income).
Taking the lead of these goals is Zelda Oosthuizen (owner), who has taken the title of Marketing Director for FireFly Biofuel where her knowledge and qualification of more than a decade of experience in the Leisure Industry (Procurement Manager) for a Large Corporate entity, far out shine her disability and we are lucky to have her.
